(948) Proposal to conserve 4662a Tontelea (Celastraceae) with a conserved type Naturalis

Aublet based Tontelea and its only named species, T. scandens, on material he collected in French Guiana, illustrated as pl. 10 in the original publication. Aublet’s specimens are incorporated in the herbarium of J. J. Rousseau (now located in the Paris Herbarium in herbier Denaiffe) and also in the Herbarium of the British Museum. The sheet in herbier Denaiffe was identified by Lanjouw and Uittien (1940) as the original for Aublet’s pl. 10, which shows a flowering twig, analysis of a flower, and a detached leaf much larger than the leaves on the twig. From a photograph of this sheet it appears that the inflorescence is reproduced only in fragmentary form in the drawing. On the wood anatomy of the tribe “Olmedieae” (Moraceae) and the position of the genus Olmedia R. & P Naturalis

The structure of the wood of the genera Castilla, Helicostylis, Maquira, Naucleopsis, Olmedia, Perebea and Pseudolmedia, considered to belong in the Olmedieae (cf. Berg 1972) is described. The diversity in anatomical structure between the genera is small, and it is hard to distinguish Maquira, Perebea and Pseudolmedia from each other. Castilla can be recognized by its thinwalled and wide-lumined fibres, Helicostylis by its parenchyma distribution, Naucleopsis (usually) by its more numerous vessels with a smaller diameter. A more marked difference is shown by the monotypic genus Olmedia with apotracheal banded parenchyma instead of the paratracheal aliform to confluent-banded parenchyma of the other genera. “Soft-rot” in a wood sample of Dicranostyles: a rectification Naturalis

Peculiar slit-like apertures in the walls of the fibre tracheids of Dicranostyles mildbraediana described in a previous paper, were recognized by the co-author as the result of a ‘soft-rot’ fungal attack. Consequently these structures are not a characteristic feature of this species.

The wood structure of Dicranostyles (Convolvulaceae) Naturalis

The anatomy of the mature wood of three species of the South American genus of woody climbers Dicranostyles Bth. is described and compared with that of the secondary wood of other genera of the Convolvulaceae. The stems are characterized by the occurrence of concentric rings of included phloem tissue. In most characters the three species are quite similar, except for the absence of rays over two cells wide in D. guianensis. Instead of these, aggregate rays occur at intervals between consecutive rings of included phloem. D. mildbraediana possesses fibre tracheids with next to the normal large bordered pits numerous very large irregular slits giving the impression of a helical sculpturing of the walls. Wood anatomy of the Euphorbiaceae, in particular of the subfamily Phyllanthoideae Naturalis

The great variety in wood structure of the large family Euphorbiaceae makes it impossible to describe briefly a general wood pattern. Nevertheless, a more or less clear division into four anatomical groups can be made. A short overview is given of the wood structure of the uni-ovulate subfamilies Acalyphoideae, Crotonoideae, and Euphorbioideae, following the classification by Webster. These subfamilies cannot be distinguished by their anatomy. The paper is mainly devoted to the bi-ovulate subfamily Phyllanthoideae. Within this subfamily, two groups can be recognized on the basis of their wood anatomy: the Aporusa type with a great number of primitive characters, and the Glochidion type, in which primitive features such as scalariform vessel perforation...

Wood anatomy of the genus Euplassa and its relation to other Proteaceae of the Guianas and Brazil Naturalis

Three genera of the Proteaceae belonging to the tribe Grevilleeae occur in the Guianas and Brazil: Roupala, Panopsis, and Euplassa. The microscopical wood structure of one of these genera, Euplassa, has not been described before. Anatomically it proves to be nearly identical with Panopsis which it also resembles in general properties. Roupala differs in several respects. Within the genera differences are not fundamental and chiefly a matter of numbers and dimensions. A key to the genera is given. The relation of these three genera with the two other members of the tribe in South America, Orites and Gevuina, is discussed.

Wood structure of the genus Talisia (Sapindaceae) Naturalis

A description of the wood structure of 15 species of Talisia from the Guianas and adjacent areas is given. Among the neogean genera of the Sapindaceae Talisia is readily recognized by the combination of moderately few vessels, uniseriate or bi-seriate homocellular rays, aliformconfluent to banded parenchyma, the cells often containing rhombic crystals, and thick-walled fibres with a narrow lumen. The wood structure of the species is much alike, and it is not possible to identify a wood specimen to species on wood structure alone. It is pointed out that nearly identical wood occurs in the genera Guarea and Trichilia of the Meliaceae; the resemblance to some genera of tropical South American Leguminosae is more superficial.
